The relationship between implicit racial bias and audiovisual integration of nonnative-accented speech ...

Abstract: A large body of work shows that recognition accuracy (i.e., the proportion of words correctly identified) is improved when visual information (video) is added to the corresponding audio signal (Erber, 1969; see review by Peelle & Sommers, 2015). However, this process of audiovisual (AV) integration has primarily been investigated using recordings of native speakers of a given language. In a foundational study, Yi, Phelps, Smiljanic, and Chandrasekaran (2013) investigated AV integration for native vs. nonnative (Korean-accented English) speech, and found that visual cues improved recognition accuracy for native speech to a greater degree than for nonnative speech; this result, which has also been found in cochlear-implant users (Waddington et al., 2020), indicates that AV integration during the perception of nonnative-accented speech may be less effective. In the proposed study, we plan to complete a direct replication of Yi et al. (2013) in a larger sample (collected online). We aim to either confirm or ...
